Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Amazon category calculator work?
Start typing any Amazon product category or niche keyword. The tool searches across 36,885 Amazon categories and maps your selection to its top-level and subcategory data, showing real marketplace metrics including monthly revenue, seller vs. Amazon revenue share, competition density, and average pricing.
Where does the data come from?
Category metrics are sourced from SmartScout, a leading Amazon analytics platform. The data includes monthly revenue estimates, number of brands and sellers, average review counts, pricing, and more for every Amazon Best Sellers category.
What is the Opportunity Score?
The Opportunity Score is a composite metric that weighs revenue per ASIN (market size vs. competition), seller revenue share (how much goes to third-party sellers vs. Amazon), and average page score (listing quality). Higher scores indicate categories where third-party sellers have better chances of capturing meaningful revenue.
What is the Competition Score?
The Competition Score factors in the number of brands, average number of sellers per listing, and total ASINs in the category. Higher scores mean more crowded categories with established players. Lower scores suggest less saturated markets.
Can I use this to estimate my own Amazon sales?
Yes. Once you find your target category, use the monthly revenue and number of ASINs to calculate average revenue per listing. Apply the seller revenue share to understand how much of that market is accessible to third-party sellers. This gives you a realistic ceiling for a new product launch in that category.
How often is the data updated?
The dataset reflects the most recent SmartScout category snapshot as of 2026. Revenue and competition metrics are based on trailing estimates and may shift seasonally.
How does the P&L Calculator work?
After selecting a category, the P&L Calculator lets you input your target monthly units, selling price, and all cost line items: COGS, inbound shipping, Amazon referral fee, FBA fulfillment fee, storage fees, return rate, PPC ad spend, and other costs. It generates a full profit & loss statement showing per-unit, monthly, and yearly figures for revenue, landed cost, Amazon fees, gross profit, advertising, returns, and net profit — complete with margin percentages, break-even ACOS, and a visual cost breakdown bar.
